Wellness at Legacy Charter School

Legacy Charter School is committed to providing school environments that promote and protect children’s health, well-being, and ability to learn by supporting healthy eating and physical activity (view Wellness Policy). Therefore, it is the policy of Legacy Charter School that:

  • The school will engage students, parents, teachers, food service professionals, health professionals, and other interested community members in developing, implementing, monitoring, and reviewing the  nutrition and physical activity policies.

  • All students will have opportunities, support, and encouragement to be physically active on a regular basis.
  • Qualified child nutrition professionals (Chartwells Corporation) will provide students with access to a variety of affordable, nutritious, and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students; religious, ethnic, and cultural diversity of the student body in meal planning, will accommodate allergy awareness and will provide clean, safe, and pleasant settings and adequate time for students to eat.
  • Legacy Charter is a peanut and tree nut free school.
  • To the maximum extent practicable, our school will participate in available federal school meal programs (including the School Breakfast Program, National School Lunch Program [including after-school snacks], Summer Food Service Program, Fruit and Vegetable Snack Program, and Child and Adult Care Food Program [including suppers]).
  • LCS will provide nutrition education and physical education to foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity, and will establish linkages between health education and school meal programs, and with related community services.
  • LCS  will foster lifelong habits of healthy eating and physical activity for faculty and staff as well as students and will provide the mechanisms to accomplish these goals.

Cooking Club

As a school that stresses Superior Nutrition as one of its three academic focuses, Legacy will also partner with Chartwells School Dining Services to support The Legacy Cooking Club. Community volunteer "Mama D" (Debbie Hedrick) teaches a series of culinary classes on nutritional and cooking skills to our high school scholars. The Legacy Cooking Club grows our scholars’ culinary knowledge, empowering them to make better nutritional choices, and ultimately, to carry the techniques and best practices learned back to their families in the Legacy Zone.
